Summary
The article I chose to read was called “Teacher who called students ‘loathsome,’ ‘rat-like’ is fired” by Jillian Eugenios. In this article, Eugenios recalls the story of an English teacher by the name of Natalie Munroe whom ran a blog to complain about her students. When her employers got a hold of the malicious web page, she was fired almost instantly. Munroe plans on suing, due to this violating her right to free speech. When asked to apologize, Munroe refused.
Editorial
Personally, I believe that Munroe was completely out of line with the things she said about her students. It is her job as a teacher to teach them, they are only ‘dim’ because she wasn’t doing her job correctly. I also believe that she should apologize to her students. Though everyone has the right to the freedom of speech, that doesn’t mean you can use it to be a complete jerk. It may be a right, but that isn’t the right to be mean. Also, making fun of her students is bullying, and she should know better than that.
Outside Connection
Teachers everywhere could take a lesson from this article. Natalie Munroe bullied her students over the internet, and is a bad example. No matter how ‘dim’ you believe your students are, you have no right to say terrible things about them. Bullying is bullying no matter where it comes from or how it happens. Hopefully, teachers can look at this article as a lesson.
